In 2004 Nathan received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. He now works full time in his studio in southern Missouri. Most of his sculpture work is constructed of relatively small clay parts. These are fired separately and then assembled with bolts and rubber gaskets. His pottery work is functional stoneware and it is meant to be used.
“What motivates me besides the developing narrative around the pieces is the engineering that goes into each sculpture. This happens largely inside my head though I often do some sketching on paper before I start a new piece. Some pieces need to stew in my brain for quite some time before they emerge in the physical world. Others manifest quickly. The work evolves in complexity as I go along and learn what is possible. So too the narrative behind it all. I look forward to figuring out how to build each new piece and while I build figuring out how it fits into the story.”
